Natural sciences at BG
Do you think the Science subjects are exciting?
If you find physics, chemistry, geography or biology exciting, and you like to immerse yourself in the world of nature, here at BG we have a wide range of different offers. With us you can register for many different professional competitions, camps, courses and talent offers. So check it out - and see if some of the offers are something for you!
Natural science opportunities
Below you can see the many offers that you have the opportunity to participate in as a student at BG. Some offers work at the class level, while other offers can be signed up for individually. Check them out and throw yourself into new exciting experiences in science.
BioTech Championships
For the BioTech Championships in Kalundborg, the class participates in a case-based competition. In the subjects of physics, chemistry, biotechnology or biology, you have to come up with ideas for future innovative solutions. The innovative solutions must be seen in the light of the UN global goals.
Science Day
Science Day is held every year at the beginning of October - a day dedicated to the natural sciences. Here, individual students or entire classes can participate in exciting courses at universities and companies. Certain courses get booked quickly, so be quick (before the summer holidays or the first week of the school year).
Young People's Science Association (UNF)
This voluntary association stands for exciting and inspiring natural science events all over the country. This includes evening presentations, weekend workshops and longer science camps. You can register as an individual student or take the whole class with you. Many of the activities are free for students as the school is a member of the association. See the full program on the website.
The Academy for Talented Young People
The Academy for Talented Young People is a 2-year program for those who are strong academically and crave challenges and the opportunity to learn more. Come to lectures, participate in workshops and get the opportunity to work on a project with some of the country's leading professors, researchers, and companies. Make new and valuable contacts with other young people who are passionate about the same things as you, and learn from the best. We create the framework so that you can develop and thrive in a stimulating environment.

Lundbeck's Drughunter Competition
In the Drughunger competition, you can use your knowledge from teaching to experiment with the development of new and better medicines. There are competitions for students in chemistry, biology, and biotechnology. The topics can cover everything from physiology of the nervous system to medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. First, you compete internally in groups in the classes, and the winner of the class sends their answer to Lundbeck. On the day of the finals, the group will enter Lundbeck and compete against students from other high schools. BG's students are often among the finalists and we have brought home many prizes.
Young researchers
Young Researchers works to find, recognize, and challenge talents in science. All students must become as good as they can be; even the most talented can still grow. Young Researchers is a talent program for both dreamers with high ceilings and for the practitioners who get involved in very concrete, real-life issues. Through problem-based project work, the talents get the opportunity to cultivate their interest in science, and in competition with the country's best young reserachers, they can reach to completely new heights.
Danish Championships in Science
Every year a Danish Championships in science is held for the new 1g students. At BG, students sign up for the competition in teams of three. The team competes in experimental and theoretical skills, within the subjects of physics, chemistry and biology. The competition starts with an internal duel at BG, where the students compete to represent BG at Danish Championships. After this, there is an opportunity to come to the European championships. BG has good traditions in the competition, so gather a good team and try your luck.
Biotech Academy Camp
Do you want a deeper insight into biotechnology research and to expand your knowledge about, for example, antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria? Then come and have an unforgettable experience at the Biotech Academy Camp together with about 20 other committed high school students. The topic varies each year, but it could be that we delve into, for example,"superbugs," which are multi-resistant bacteria that are currently threatening world health. At the Biotech Academy Camp, you will gain a thorough insight into the problem through company visits, lectures, workshops, as well as computer and laboratory exercises. In the laboratory, you will work to find possible solutions yourself, so that perhaps yin the future you will help solve this worldwide problem.
Robots Course
In 2019, we were awarded 800,000dkk by the Novo Nordisk Foundation to further develop our work with robots in education. This means that all new STX students get to program robots in class. Here you get the opportunity to use your innovative skills and practice mathematics.
BioScience Camp
If you choose biology at A level at Birkerød Gymnasium, you also say yes to two high-level trips to the Marine Biology Laboratory in Helsingør. Here we investigate in both 2nd and 3rd g which special ecological conditions make the Øresund a completely unique body of water in Denmark. On the trips, we get help from the skilled employees at the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Øresunda Aquarium, who give presentations and help with both the field studies and afterwards in the laboratory.
George Mohr
The George Mohr Competition is a mathematics competition for high school students. Here you can cultivate your interest in mathematics, and be challenged together with the most talented students at a level that is higher than you would encounter in daily teaching. The competition is also part of the selection of participants for the IMO, the International Mathemical Olympiad. The George Mohr Competition takes place in two rounds. The first round is helpd in mid-autumn, and the second round is held in January. The first round requires no registration and anyone can participate. If you receive a good result in the first round, then you quality to participate in the second round.
