BIGMUN
BIGMUN is Birkerød Gymnasium’s annual MUN conference, Birkerød Gymnasium Model United Nations. By hosting a youth conference in which young people from many different countries participate, it is possible to participate as a delegate, where you help to discuss global issues or work as a journalist, for example. The conference extends over five days during week 8, and the applications are decided by the steering committee behind the conference. As a delegate, you will push beyond your personal opinions and adopt those of another country, thus gaining a global perspective. As a member if the Press Group you will be covering the conference, including the website www.bigmun.dk and related social media accounts. If public speaking isn't your thing, you can practice your language skills in either English, German or another language by hosting one or more of the visiting students during the five days of BIGMUN. Lotte Vest is the teacher to contact if you want to know more or just want to sign up as a host.

Happy Reading at Birkerød Gymnasium
At Birkerød Gymnasium we do Happy Reading every January as a tradition. Here, twice a week, we break up the school day for all 2.g students, who are instead allowed to sit down and read a fiction book of their own choosing. Happy Reading creates calm and presence in a dark and busy time, while also strengthening the students' ability to concentrate and their joy of reading. In the students' busy everyday lives, it is difficult to find time to immerse themselves in reading for pleasure. Therefore, the idea with Happy Reading is to set up a framework with quiet time without notifications, just reading in quiet surroundings and yet in the company of the class. It has also been shown that reading for longer periods without interruptions trains our general reading comprehension and reading speed, which can benefit the students in all subjects and later in their further studies. To increase young people's connection to libraries, we accompany the Happy reading tradition every year with varying collaborations with the school's study center and Birkerød Library, which, for example, helps recommend books to students.

Start-up Academy
If you take the business economics course, you can take part in our Start-up Academy, which is an entrepreneurial course for those who are driven, ambitious, and dream big. During two months, you will be introduced to entrepreneurship from ideas to reality and you will receive training in developing, designing, testing, and pitching your own ideas. The course consists of project work once a week every Monday from 16.00-18.30. Skilled and experienced entrepreneurs are brought in for each teaching session, who teach entrepreneurship while also helping connect theory and practice. The course ends with everyone pitching their ideas to a panel of entrepreneurs. The best idea wins a one-year mentoring program with an experienced entrepreneur.

Debate Club
Being able to participate in a discussion and being able to argue one's case is an important competency in a democratic society. We want to support the development of this skillset at BG, and therefore we offer a debate club where we acitively participate in debate competitions with other schools. You will also have the opportunity to sharpen your argumentation skills in our MUN Society and at the school's BIGMUN (Big Model UN) conference.

InterMat
InterMat is a collaboration between high schools in Zealand and DTU/Matematicum. The project was started in 2014 at Birkerød Gymnasium with the aim of helping students get off to a good start with higher studies within a math context. Since then, the concept has spread to a large number of secondary schools, with BG as the leader. InterMat is a voluntary offer that runs over a year, from 2nd year to 3rd year. It is schedule with 1 module (1.5 hours) every two weeks. Additionally, a large project day is held at DTU with lecturs, experiments, and group exercises. A good added benefit is that some of the students are professionaly trained for SRP topics that they would otherwise not have been able to work with. DTU Compute has newly developed a number of SRP exercises as an extension of the InterMat material.
