IB

The pre-IB year

If you have attended school for 9-10 years already, you can apply for pre-IB. Pre-IB is equivalent to the Danish 1g, IB MYP5, and the final year of the British GCSE/IGCSE.

Pre-IB is a unique chance to meet both the international atmosphere of the IB programme as well as the Danish atmosphere of the Danish national programme.

Pre-IB is part of the Danish national programme called “stx”*. However, it has a specific IB focus as the majority of our pre-IB students, many of whom are international students from Denmark and many other countries, continue into the IB Diploma Programme afterwards.

In this way, the pre-IB prepares you for the two-year IB Diploma Programme as well as it awards you the qualifications from the 1st year Danish Programme.

Doing the pre-IB year will give you the necessary skills for the more challenging IB Diploma subjects. Furthermore, it will give you the possibility of getting to know the school environment and the student requirements, and you will be introduced to the structure and elements of the international IB education before entering into the IB Diploma programme.

Pre-IB will introduce you to a variety of subjects which will enable you to make sound choices for the following years. The subjects, including the Danish stx elements, will prepare you for the IB Diploma Programme. Your future IB subject choices will thereby be based on your own personal experiences rather than your expectations.

Subjects in pre-IB

The subjects that we offer in pre-IB:

  • English
  • Danish (at A-level, taught as mother-tongue, or at two-three different B-levels, taught as beginner’s or second language)
  • French B or German B (if you have had three years’ previous teaching in the language) or Spanish ab initio (beginner’s level)
  • A general linguistics course, including an introduction to Latin, for the first three months of the year (called AP)

Pre-IB will award you several C-levels from the Danish national programme. In many cases, these qualifications will be helpful in applying to Danish universities after the IB Diploma.

  • Two of the natural sciences: Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Physical Geography
  • One of the arts: Music or Visual Arts

Transfer to a Danish STX

By law, pre-IB is equivalent to the first year of the Danish “Gymnasium” (stx). Should you choose not to continue into the IB Diploma Programme, it is, therefore possible to transfer into the Danish system, just as it is possible to transfer from the Danish system into pre-IB and/or IB.
