Rules of conduct for study, order, and online teaching

According to the Ministry of Education’s order no. 1338 on December 9, 2019, the study and order rules must contribute to both fulfilling the educational objectives, a healthy teaching environment, and good well-being for the students.

STUDY RULES

All students have a right and duty to participate in the school's teaching, including tests, submitting written assignments and yearly exams, be it on or off the BG campus.

Active participation:

Being an active student, which is a condition for studying at BG, requires that:

  • You attend class on time.
  • You come prepared for the teaching.
  • You contribute actively and positively to the class.
  • You submit written assignments on time.
  • Your written work is prepared independently.

Absences:

  • Registration of absences. All absences - including failure to hand in written assigments - are recorded. The registration can be extended for more than one school year if there is doubt about the student's ability to complete the education within a normal timeframe and under normal conditions. For prolonged absences due to illness, which extend over more than two weeks, the school may require medical documentation, which is to be paid for by the student/parents.
  • Addressing absences. When the school finds that a student is not academically active, one or more of the measures below will be taken.
  • A conversation with academic advisors or school leadership. Generally negligence interviews are held with all new students the first time excessive absences are noted.
  • Written warning. A written warning will be given, with a copy sent to the parents if the student is under 18 years of age. Parents of the students at the boarding school are always infomed in connection with warnings, regardless of the student's age.
  • Temporary expulsion. During the period in which a student is expelled, he/she is still required to submit any due assignments for class. In addition, he/she must seriously consider his/her future at BG. (The school can choose to implement this sanction on an individual basis, for example, in connection with too many missed written assignments).
  • Deprivatoin of the right to SU. If an SU-eligible student has had a meeting with his/her guidance counsellor regarding absences and in the subsequent period has not significantly changed his/her absence pattern, then that student might be deprived of the right to receive SU due to lack of academic activity.
  • Examination under special conditions. Upper secondary school students are placed under special conditions and must sit exams in all subjects at the relevant grade level in the relevant year.
  • Expulsion. The student is permanently expelled from the school.
  • Collective absences: Collective absences (i.e. when a group of students skip at the same time) from classes, tests, or field trips is a severe violation of student rules of conduct, and can lead to a written warning, exclusion from social events, or expulsion from school.

Tests and written assignments:

  • If, during a written or oral test, it is found that the examinee has been guilty of cheating and obtained illegal help or used non-permitted aids - including unauthorized use of the internet - the person in question will be expelled from the test. If it is an annual test or a written assignment, the grade minus 3 can be give for the test or assignment in question. In the event of repeated detection of cheating, the student may be expelled from school.
  • In a written assignment or a field of study project, students must always use precise source references when using other people's works.
  • When handing in a written assignment, an examinee must confirm with his/her signature that the assignment was completed without undue help.
  • In the event of failure to hand in written assignments, the teacher in question can require the student to attend school for a certain period of time after school hours in order to complete and hand in the assignment. Failure to attend the "writing detention" may result in expulsion from the school.

Advancement:

  • A student can be denied advancement to the next grade if his/her grade at the end of the school year is below 2.0 and if it is assessed that the student has not sufficiently benefited from the course completed.

Returning books, etc:

  • All books and other supplies which have been made available to the students must be returned or, in the event of loss, replaced in accordance wih the school's instructions. In the event of non-delivery or non-payment of compensation, the school will take the necessary legal steps to recover the amount.

RULES OF CONDUCT

All students have a duty to comply with the following rules for order and behaviour:

  • Show consideration in your general behaviour and show respect for the school, for the teaching, and for your fellow human beings. Everyone thrives and feels better when the school is characterized by a good atmosphere and when the school its surroundings are clean and orderly.
  • Everyone is responsible for cleaning up after themselves before leaving a used area. This applies both indoors and outdoors. Everyone who stays on the school grounds also has a duty to make an active effort to keep the school clean and tidy. As part of this effort, projects can be created in which both students and staff are obliged to participate.
  • If BG students are gathered outside BG grounds but still in the vicinity of the school in public places, where they can be recognized as such, then both the individual and the group must be mindful not to behave in a way that is disruptive to neighbors or to other people who walk where the students are gathered.
  • Physical or psychological bullying do not have a place at BG. Malicious, reckless, or violent behaviour entails consequences in the form of a verbal or a written warning from the school and, in repeated cases, may lead to expulsion.
  • Dissemination (sharing) of sound and image recordings of someone else's private affairs or otherwise by someone else in circumstances where the other person can obviously claim exemption from such disclosure may be sanctioned according to the study and order rules, even if the disclosure (sharing) has take place outside of school, including during free time, if the specific behaviour here has a direct impact on the teaching environment, including order and togetherness at school. The sanction for disseminating sound and image recordings of private affairs without consent - especially recordings with content that my violate the modesty or personal integrity of others - may be expulsion from school.
  • Graffiti and other destruction of school property is vandalism and can be prosecuted. Graffiti and other vandalism may result in expulsion from school.

The principal can give permission for the sale of beer and wine at events. If a teacher on duty deems it necessary, you can be refused entry or may be shown out.
  • The school is a smoke-free environment and has smoke-free school hours. This means that the school's students and staff may not smoke either on or outside the school buildings during school/working hours. It is also not allowed to smoke when going away from the school on breaks or on study trips.
  • You are not allowed to consume food or drink in the corridors or in the teaching rooms. By special agreement with the teacher, this can be waived.
  • The use of mobile phones, the internet, computers and the like that are not related to the teaching are prohibited during teaching hours. Consequences for violation include a verbal or written warning from the school and, in repeated cases, my lead to expulsion.
  • Bikes may only be parked at the outdoor bicycle parking lot. Skooters and motorbikes are parked at the end of the car park toward the stadium. Students' cars may only be parked in the car park if a parking permit has been issued from the school office. Parking must be done within the marked stalls. Violation of the ban on parking without a permit entails consequences in the form of a warning and, in repeated cases, may lead to expulsion.
  • Notices are posted on the bulletin board where they belong. Only by exception may messages be set up elsewhere - and only by agreement with the office. Distribution of free printed material may only take place by agreement with the office.
  • In teaching and otherwise on the school grounds and on study trips, the general instructions give by the responsible employee must be followed.

Consequences/sanctions for violating the study and order rules:

A student may be given a verbal warning for violation of the study and order rules of a less serious nature.

If a verbal warning is not a sufficient reaction to a student who has disregarded the rules for order and togetherness or the duty to participate actively in teaching, the principal decides to what extent one of the following reactions must be implemented as a reasonable and relevant sanction in relation to the specific violation of the study and order rules:

  • Conversations
  • Warnings
  • Exclusion from specific events and activities

Code of conduct for parties and social events at BG

Principles

The code of conduct supplements the school's study and order rules and applies in connection with holding social events at the school, such as parties, Friday cafes, or equivalent events.

To participate in school parties and other social events, BG requires that:

  • You participate in the parties and the other social events with respect for your classmates and the staff, which also includes the guards hired externally
  • Your contribute actively and positively to the running of the parties/events
  • You do not show up to the party drunk or otherwise under the influence
  • You do not bring your own drinks
  • Your are able to take care of yourself throughout the party/social event
  • You and your peers exercise, to the greatest extent possible, display self-discipline in line with the school's overall values and within the applicable study and order rules with associated code of conduct for the parties.

Consequences and possible sanctions for violating the code of conduct

Violation of BG's code of conduct at parties may result in sanctions proportional with the extent and severity of the violation.

The following sanctions and disciplinary actions can be applied:

  • Being sent home from parties and social events if you display inappropriate behaviour. The sanctions are graduated according to the scope and severity of the behaviour, but the following levels can be applied:
    • Calling home from a party
    • Calling home from a party followed by a "Monday conversation" with the principal or another of the management team
    • Exclusion from the next party and/or social event
    • Exclusion from more parties and/or social events
    • Exclusion from the rest of the parties and/or social arrangements for the rest of the school year

  • Tests for alcohol and/or drugs in cases of double and/or a random sample can be used. The above mentioned sanctions are additionally supplemented by the sanctions that follow from the school's general order and study rules.

The scale of sanctions must be taken seriously, and it is ultimately the responsible management person on the day and/or the party manager who makes the immediate decision. The immediate decision can be supplemented with a subsequent interview and possible sanctions ("Monday interview" with the principal or another member of the management team).

The school's management team can waive the rules, when necessary.
