Parliamentary candidates meet 2nd and 3rd year students: Election meeting at Birkerød Gymnasium

Friday, March 20, 9:45–11:20 a.m., Birkerød Gymnasium will be the setting for a large election meeting for the school's 2nd and 3rd year students. Here, young voters – and future voters – will meet parliamentary candidates from across the political spectrum for a debate on some of the most significant political divides of our time.

After the election debate, the candidates and parties will have the opportunity to set up a stall and answer questions in the canteen.

The following candidates will participate:

  • Mette Thiesen (DF)
  • Martin Lidegaard (RV)
  • Rasmus Stoklund (S)
  • Marianne Lynghøj (V)
  • Rasmus Lund-Nielsen (M)
  • Steffen Frølund (LA)
  • Birgitte Bergman (K)
  • Martin Nordstjerne (BP)
  • Sinem Dybvad Demir (EL)
  • Rasmus Bech Harning (ALT)
  • Peter Westermann (SF)
  • The Danish Democrats (DD) have canceled.

The debate focuses on three main themes:

  • Welfare and wealth tax
  • Immigration policy
  • Drinking water quality and spray ban

The themes have been chosen because they contain both classic ideological disagreements and concrete consequences for the future of young people – economically, socially and environmentally.

Due to space constraints, the event is organized in two parallel debates. The parties are divided into two groups of six candidates, each placed in a separate room – one with 2.g students and one with 3.g students. Midway through, the candidates change rooms, so that all students meet all parties during the hour and a half that the event lasts.

Each candidate begins with a two-minute presentation of their own key issues. Then it is up to the students. The questions are prepared in class, and the format allows for both critical, investigative and perspective-building input.

At Birkerød Gymnasium, democratic education is part of the school's core mission. The election meeting is not a show – it is teaching in practice. When students ask questions about taxes, welfare, immigration policy and the protection of drinking water, they train their ability to analyze arguments, understand political priorities and take an informed position.

The meeting between young people and politicians is crucial. Not only to engage future voters, but also to give decision-makers direct insight into the questions and concerns that are affecting the generation that will live the longest with the political choices made today.

The press is welcome to participate.
