Elite Sports and Life Skills at BG
At Birkerød Gymnasium, STX, HF, IB & Boarding School, all Team Denmark and elite sports students are offered a Life Skills course aimed at creating an awareness of how many of the skills learned from elite sports can be applied in everyday life.
The young people already understand that mission and values in elite sports can be crucial in terms of performance and results. In the Life Skills course, the focus is on how awareness of mission and values in everyday life can create a foundation as a person, and how awareness of one's core values can be used as an inner compass, especially useful when things are difficult, hard, and overwhelming.
In a society where young people increasingly experience distress, it is significant to know one's own foundation. It helps to hold on to oneself and who one wants to be, rather than who one thinks the surroundings expect one to be...!
There is much that can be transferred from the world of sports to the world of academics!
The Life Skills course is entirely without the use of distracting 'aids.' Instead, a notebook, a pencil, and a great deal of presence are used, providing space for calm, reflection, and immersion, and for conversations where much is shared, and where listening is not to respond, but to understand!
"I experience young people who, with great trust, open up about what is on their minds. I experience young people who develop an already good ability to reflect and articulate thoughts and feelings. And I experience (again and again) how growing up with sports, community life, and fellowship contributes to creating strong young people with a solid springboard into youth and adult life!" - says Stine Møllebro, Elite Sports Coordinator at Birkerød Gymnasium, STX, HF, IB & Boarding School.
